I don’t care for it – much harder to work with

I have health Concerns with lead-free' soldering

Lead free solder was "Initially intended to replace the use of traditional leaded solder with the new, lead free variant

"Recent research has suggested that the fumes and vapours emanating from lead-free solders may be even more dangerous to workers and the environment than those emitted by traditional lead containing solders,"

It seems that the best intentions have had unintended consequences.

lead-free solders use rosin as a fluxing agent. Tin-lead solders melt at around 180°C, whereas lead-free solders melt at temperatures 30-40°C higher. the higher temperatures required for lead-free soldering will significantly increase the amount of fume produced. Higher temp causing more chemical reaction.

As solder fume is one of the top eight causes of occupational asthma.

set your solder iron slightly higher temperature

notice that slightly longer dwell times are needed because of higher melting points.

Wetting is also a little slower when compared to tin/lead.

Lead free solder is more prone to solder bridges (shorts). Tin whisker growth is also possible

I've researched, using lead for solder really isn't that bad.

I don't put solder in my mouth

Washing hands will help

there is no need to have my face that close to my work where I will inhale the fumes.

problems with lead-free soldering are:

a higher melting temperature may damage components
a higher temperature can cause PCB warping
a higher melting temperature may cause thermal shock to a component
a higher melting temperature can cause plastics to melt or deform
higher soldering temperatures result in poor solder spread
the need to use more active (and corrosive) fluxes
bridging or insufficient solder
shorter tip life
dull finish solder joint (not shiny)
